EU Approves Rose Geranium Essential Oil and Other products as Feed Additives

2025-06-23

essential oils have broad application prospects as feed additives. Especially under the global trend of "antibiotic reduction/antibiotic prohibition", their natural antibacterial, growth-promoting and immune-regulating properties are becoming a key research direction in the animal husbandry industry.

On April 1, 2025, the European Union issued Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/630, approving Geranium rose essential oil, Eucalyptus essential oil and Lemongrass essential oil as feed additives for all animal species. This regulation will take effect on the twentieth day after publication.

The above additives belong to the category of "sensory additives" and the functional group is "flavoring compounds"; the authorization is valid until April 21, 2035.

Purity standards must be met (e.g. 1,8-cineole ≥ 80% in eucalyptus oil) to provide a compliant version for the global market.

Market Outlook Forecast

1. Scale growth
The global animal feed essential oil market will increase from US$480 million in 2023 to US$1.23 billion in 2030 (CAGR 14.5%), with Asia-Pacific being the fastest growing region (Data Bridge data)

2. Application scenario expansion:
- Aquaculture: Eucalyptus oil replaces formaldehyde to prevent and treat fish saprolegniasis (successful test, no residue).
- Pet food: anxiety relief formula for cats and dogs (such as prescription food containing 0.001% Chamomile Oil).

3. Industry chain integration trend:
- Feed companies acquire essential oil extraction plants to achieve "planting-extraction-formulation" integration.
